Banana Oat Mug Cake Recipe
This is my current favorite mug cake recipe! Banana bread is so warm and comforting, and this one is healthy and quick too!

I love baking with different flours, and changing up basic recipes like banana bread.
This banana mug cake doesn’t even really use flour. Oat flour is really just finely ground oats, so if you get gluten-free certified oats (like these), then this is a gluten-free banana mug cake too!
Oat flour is naturally sweeter than regular white flour. The oat flour combined with the sweetness of ripe bananas means I was able to keep this banana oat mug cake refined sugar-free as well.

If you have a serious sweet craving, feel free to add 1-2 tablespoons of granulated sugar (white sugar, coconut sugar, erythritol, etc.) to the mug cake batter.
In either case, this healthy banana bread for one is quick to whip up – no waiting a whole hour for a loaf of banana bread to bake.
And it gives you 10 grams of protein and is only 282 calories for a good-sized mug cake!

Banana Oat Mug Cake Tips
When I make mug cakes, I usually put the mug on a plate or paper towel. This way it catches any overflow, when you’re figuring out how long to cook your mug cake for in your microwave with your particular mug.
Speaking of mugs, these are my favorite unique mugs you can find on Amazon. I have gifted a few of these mugs, and bought two for myself too. They’re really fun!
My oat banana mug cake took 75 seconds to cook, but it could take anywhere between 1-2 minutes. Stop after 1 minute, and if it’s not done add 15 seconds at a time until it is!

If you don’t need or want this banana mug cake to be gluten-free, you can substitute the oat flour with an equal amount of regular wheat flour, or whole wheat flour.
If you’d like to try baking with oat flour, I like this one a lot – it’s very smooth.
You can also blitz a cup of rolled oats or steel cut oats in your blender or food processor to make your own oat flour. If I’m making a mug cake though, I don’t usually have the extra time to make my own flour (snack cravings are impatient).

Now I keep a small bag of oat flour in my fridge, to use whenever I need it. You can keep it in your pantry, but the fridge will just keep it fresher for longer.
If you omit the chocolate chips, or use stevia-sweetened chocolate chips (these are the best), this recipe is refined sugar-free.
If that doesn’t concern you, use whatever chocolate chips you have and love.
