I decided to make an ultimate mug cake guide, where I share my 15 best tips for the most delicious mini cakes, plus the most common mug cake questions I get (along with answers, because otherwise this would be a pretty crappy guide).

1. Choose the Right Mug

The mug you use does matter when you’re making a mug cake.

Look for a microwave-safe mug that holds at least 12 to 16 ounces. A larger mug gives your cake room to rise without overflowing. I loveee these mugs, especially the white.

Avoid:

  • Small coffee cups
  • Narrow mugs
  • Delicate mugs that aren’t microwave safe

A wide mug also helps your cake cook more evenly.

You can also use a baking ramekin like this; just make sure the one you use isn’t shallow.

2. Measure Carefully

Mug cakes are small, so even an extra tablespoon of flour can change the texture.

For the best results:

  • Level off measuring spoons
  • Don’t pack flour into the measuring spoon
  • Measure liquids carefully

3. Don’t Overmix

Once the wet and dry ingredients are combined, stop stirring.

Overmixing develops gluten, which can make your mug cake chewy instead of soft.

Mix just until you don’t see dry flour.

4. Know Your Microwave

Not all microwaves cook the same.

Higher wattage microwaves cook faster, while lower wattage models need more time.

A general guide:

  • 700–800 watts: 90–120 seconds
  • 900–1000 watts: 70–90 seconds
  • 1100+ watts: 60–75 seconds

The first time you try a recipe, check it early rather than cooking it too long.

5. Don’t Overcook

This is probably the biggest mug cake mistake.

Your cake should still look slightly soft on top when you remove it.

It will continue cooking for another minute as it rests.

An extra 20 seconds in the microwave can turn a fluffy cake into a dry one.

6. Let It Rest

It’s very tempting to grab a spoon immediately…

(And sometimes I do.)

But waiting just one or two minutes allows the cake to finish setting and cool enough to enjoy.

The texture also improves during this short rest.

7. Use Fresh Baking Powder

If your mug cakes never rise very much, your baking powder may be the culprit.

Baking powder loses its strength over time.

If your baking powder has been kicking it in the back of your pantry for 10 years, it’s worth spending a few bucks and replacing it.

8. Room Temperature Ingredients Help

If you’re using milk, yogurt, butter, or eggs, they mix together more easily when they’re not ice cold.

This creates a smoother batter and more even baking.

Don’t leave them out on the counter for hours or anything, but setting them out 15 or 20 minutes before you make your mug cake can help the ingredients mix better.

9. Add Mix-Ins Carefully

Chocolate chips, berries, nuts, candy pieces, and sprinkles are fun to add, but try not to go overboard.

Too many mix-ins can make the cake heavy and prevent it from cooking evenly.

Usually 1 to 2 tablespoons is a good amount.

If that seems like too little and you are feeling very extra, add all the toppings you want, after the mug cake is cooked.

10. Know When to Use Oil vs. Butter

Both work, but they give different results.

Oil

  • Makes cakes extra moist
  • Stays soft longer
  • Creates a lighter crumb

Butter

  • Adds rich flavor
  • Creates a more classic cake taste
  • Slightly denser texture

For many mug cakes, you can use either; it just depends on what you’re craving.

11. Add a Pinch of Salt

Even sweet desserts benefit from a tiny pinch of salt.

It balances sweetness and makes flavors like chocolate and vanilla taste richer.

Don’t skip the salt!

12. Vanilla Makes Almost Everything Better

Even chocolate mug cakes benefit from a splash of pure vanilla extract.

13. Don’t Fill the Mug Too High

Your batter should fill the mug no more than halfway to two-thirds full.

Otherwise your cake may bubble over during cooking.

I have made this mug cake mistake before! Now along with not filling the mug too full, I also put the mug on a paper towel or plate when I’m making a new mug cake and don’t know how it will behave yet.

14. Mug Cake Toppings

Half the fun comes after the cake is cooked.
