Best Nutella Mug Cake
How do you like to eat Nutella?
On bread? Right from a spoon?
My favorite way to eat Nutella used to be with pretzels. I would dip the stick pretzels into Nutella love the sweet and salty combination.
That used to be my favorite way to use Nutella. Now it is this Nutella mug cake!
Sweet, fluffy, creamy (can a cake be creamy?), and you have the easiest possible frosting option: just spread some more Nutella.
Dreamy.

Where Is Nutella From?
I always love a good origin story, and the origin of Nutella is no exception.
Nutella is originally from Italy. After World War II, cocoa was extremely scarce (but still super desirable). Enter Italian baker Pietro Ferrero to solve the problem of people still wanting a sweet chocolately treat.
Ferrero made a paste with hazelnuts, sugar, and just a bit of the rare cocoa – an early version of Nutella.
Nutella has lots of fans around the world. There is a World Nutella Day, and a Nutella Café in Chicago that celebrates the iconic spread in its menu items.
One more Nutella fun fact: there are 52 hazelnuts in every jar of Nutella!

Nutella Mug Cake with 3 Ingredients
Yup, it only takes 3 ingredients to make this super yummy chocolate Nutella cake in a mug:
- Nutella (pretty essential here)
- An egg
- Flour
This mug cake is:
- gluten-free
- grain-free
- high protein
- flourless
To keep this Nutella mug cake high-protein and gluten-free, I used almond flour for the flour. It’s my favorite “flour” to use in baking, and is really just finely ground almonds.
You can substitute an equal amount of regular all-purpose flour if you don’t have almond flour.
It will change the nutrition stats on your mug cake, it won’t be gluten-free anymore, and will be fluffier. It might need a bit more or less time in the microwave, but it will take a similar amount of time to cook.

These are my favorite mugs for mug cakes, and coffee and tea! Great for gifts or for yourself!
Nutella Mug Cake with 2 Ingredients
You can even make a single serving Nutella cake using only two ingredients:
- Nutella
- an egg
Here’s how this works:
Mix an egg with a fork or whisk right into your mug or ramekin (no need to grease the mug first).
Add two tablespoons of Nutella.
Whisk or stir together until smooth.
Microwave for 1 minute on high power. If it’s not fully cooked, add 15 second increments until done.
This version of the Nutella mug cake with 2 ingredients is really yummy as well, but tastes completely different from the main recipe below.
It’s sweet and light, almost like a chocolate soufflé.
I like both versions, but I prefer the mug cake with 3 ingredients.
I would definitely make this one again if I ran out of almond flour (I love this brand).

Tips and Tricks for this Mug Cake
For the cooking time – this can vary with different microwaves and also with different mug sizes.
It took my microwave 1 minute 20 seconds to cook perfectly. The first time you make this mug cake, watch your microwave.
Test doneness, and if it needs a bit more time, add on 15 seconds at a time until it’s fully cooked. The next time you make it, you’ll know exactly how long it takes in your microwave!
For toppings, well it doesn’t really need any, but here are some suggestions if you’d like some add-ons:
- Spread on Nutella as frosting
- Whipped cream
- Coconut whipped cream
- Chocolate chips
- Chopped hazelnuts
- Berries
