Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie Recipe
One of my food-themed childhood memories involves chocolate chip cookies.
It’s not making homemade chocolate chip cookies with my mom.
It involves a mall.
My mom is a fashionista, and liked to shop especially when my sister and I were little.
Our treat for going to the mall with her while she tried on clothes was a Mrs. Fields cookie.
Have you had them?
Thick, soft-baked, warm, and every bite filled with melted chocolate. Milk chocolate, semi-sweet, white chocolate, chips and chunks, and some cookies had pecans or walnuts or macadamia nuts.
Even though we found shopping boring, we definitely did not find chocolate chip cookies boring.
And sure they had snickerdoodle cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies but as kids we wouldn’t take a second glance at those. (You should take a second glance at this snickerdoodle mug cake recipe though – it’s SO good and surprisingly healthy too).
I knew I wanted to make a chocolate chip mug cookie recipe for this site, and immediately thought of our Mrs. Fields’ weekends. 🙂
There is also a new recipe for a chocolate chip mug cake that you might want to try. It’s fluffier and more cake-like than this mug cookie recipe – both are amazing.

Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie Tips
I wouldn’t eat this mug cookie dough without cooking it (because of the raw egg) even though it’s super tempting!
I’ll make another chocolate chip mug cookie dough recipe in the future without egg so we can all get our cookie dough fix!!
For the egg…you’ll notice that we only use the yolk. This makes the chocolate chip cookie soft and chewy and rich tasting. It also gives just the right amount of moisture to balance out the dry ingredients. If you want to use a whole egg instead, add 1 tbsp more of flour.
What to do with that single egg white? Since I don’t like to waste anything, I made a quick microwave egg bite with it. Way cheaper than buying egg bites from Starbucks! I put the egg white in a ramekin with some pink salt I have and microwaved it for 45 seconds. This will vary a LOT. Stay with your egg bite while it’s in the microwave. You could add shredded cheese or vegetables to yours but I was going for speed.
If you want to make a chocolate chip cookie in a mug without brown sugar, just sub for any other granulated sugar (white sugar, coconut sugar, erythritol, etc.)
To make this a dairy-free chocolate chip cookie, use dairy-free margarine (my favorite is Earth Balance) and dairy-free chocolate chips (these are the bomb).
For a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie in a mug, simply substitute this gluten-free flour 1:1 for the regular flour in this recipe.
Okay let’s make this chocolate chip cookie in a mug!
Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
Ingredients

- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1-2 tbsp chocolate chips
- Pinch of baking soda

Instructions
1. Mix together in a small bowl the softened butter and the sugar until creamy.
2. Stir in the egg yolk, vanilla, sea salt and baking soda.
3. Add the flour and chocolate chips and stir until it comes together.
4. Put the chocolate chip cookie dough into an ungreased mug (these are my favorite mugs).
5. Microwave for 45 seconds on high and check for doneness.
6. If it needs a bit more time (you want it gooey but not raw), add 10 second increments until done.
7. Dig in or top with vanilla ice cream!
