Chocolate Mug Brownie

Are you team cake brownie or team fudge brownie?

Brownie in a mug with a spoonful

I am definitely pro fudgey brownie, whether it’s a brownie in a mug or in a pan.

I like brownies to taste like brownies and not chocolate cake.

(Nothing against chocolate cake – if you’re craving that, here is a 3-ingredient chocolate mug cake, a healthy chocolate mug cake, and hot chocolate bomb mug cake).

I’m also a brownie purist. No ice cream, whipped cream, berries, or any of that to top my brownie. Just all the chocolately goodness.

What do you like to top your brownies with?

How to Make a Mug Brownie

You will love how easy this brownie in a mug recipe is.

You don’t even need to spray or oil the mug before you put the ingredients in. I mix all the ingredients right in the mug.

If you use oil, you won’t need the extra step of melting the butter or coconut oil.

The first time I make a new mug cake recipe, I put the mug on a plate in the microwave. It’ll catch any spills while you’re figuring out the perfect amount of cooking time for your microwave.

Start with microwaving the brownie for 1 minute and check for doneness. Add 10 second increments if it needs a bit more time to cook.

There are also lots of substitutions you can do if you are missing an ingredient, so there’s no excuse to miss out on this easy mug brownie when a chocolate craving hits.

If you don’t have vanilla extract, you can skip it.

Instead of milk, you can use water.

You can choose the amount of chocolate chips, or even skip them entirely (but the brownie will taste much fudgier with them!)

And you’ll notice that this single serving brownie recipe doesn’t require any eggs.

Tips for this Brownie in a Mug Recipe

Microwave your mug brownie for 1 minute. If it’s not cooked through (too wet in the center), cook at 10 second intervals until done. You don’t want it overcooked or it could end up dry.

Don’t over-stir the ingredients or you’ll end up with a tough brownie. Just stir until the ingredients all come together.

You can easily make this a vegan mug brownie by choosing vegan chocolate chips (like these), using oil instead of butter, and using any non-dairy milk you like.

Or, just make this vegan brownie in a mug – no need to modify anything!

To make this a gluten-free brownie, sub the regular flour with a gluten-free flour like this.
