A healthy chocolate mug cake!

Oh mug cakes how I love you.  If I feel like a baked dessert or a muffin-like treat for breakfast I don’t need to take half an hour to whip up a batch of something or other.  I can satisfy my impatient cravings in mere minutes.  The mug cake is the poster-child treat for our fast-paced culture!

I could go on a big tangent here and talk about how I usually like slow-cooking and slow-eating and think we should all just generally slow the heck down, BUT that is a discussion for another post.  There are times when (yes husband I will admit) that I get hangry and first thing in the morning can be one of those times.  If I didn’t prep ahead some overnight oats or chia pudding, and if we have already had way too many scrambled eggs that week, mug cakes to the rescue!

Since this recipe for healthy single serving banana bread was so popular, I had to make another version! This healthy chocolate mug cake recipe is dessert-like yet packed with protein, gluten-free, and can be made (and delicious!) with no added sugar.

Ingredients you need for this chocolate mug cake

This recipe is super simple. Here’s what you need to make this chocolate mug cake:

  • an egg
  • almond flour
  • cocoa powder
  • a banana
  • chocolate chips

Tips to make the best chocolate mug cake

This recipe can make one thicker chocolate mug cake but I like the texture even better when the batter is divided into two dishes and cooked that way.  That way you can share one too!  If you’re just making one, increase the microwave time by 30-60 seconds.  Still super fast!

All microwaves are different so watch your chocolate mug cake to see when it’s done. Some microwaves need a bit more time. You’ll figure out the best time for you and then you’ll want to make this mug cake recipe all the time!!!

A wider mug is MUCH easier to cook mug cakes in. If you use a narrower mug, it could be hard to fully cook the middle part of the mug cake while the outside could dry out a little. I try to use the widest mug I have for mug cake recipes.

You can also use ramekins or other small glass or ceramic dishes for this recipe.

Chocolate mug cake recipe substitutions

A lot of people have tried this healthy chocolate mug cake recipe and there have been different questions about substituting ingredients.

I wanted to add some info on subs for those who have asked.

You can’t sub the almond flour with coconut flour – coconut flour acts completely different in baking than almond flour and it won’t turn out.

You CAN sub the almond flour with regular white flour. It will have a different texture, will have less protein and fewer calories than the original chocolate mug cake recipe.

You can sub the almond flour with a gluten-free flour mix. If you use white flour or a gluten-free baking mix, the microwave time might be a little different. Just keep an eye on it while it’s baking into deliciousness in the microwave.

For the chocolate chips, you can sub dairy-free chocolate chips, vegan chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, peanut butter chocolate chips, etc.

If you want a lower carb version (the almond flour and egg are already low carb), you can use stevia-sweetened chocolate chips, monk fruit chocolate chips, or (gasp) leave them out completely (don’t do it!!!!!!!!!)

Do you have a couple minutes? Then let’s make this chocolate mug cake recipe!

Love this recipe! I’m been sick recently so I’m trying to avoid “inflammatory” foods and this seems like the perfect solution for my sweet tooth! Awesome!

    1. I do the same thing when I’m sick! I up the olive oil and fatty fish and ginger and try to keep to more whole foods. I hope you love this recipe and also that you feel better soon!

  2. That looks like a really quick and satisfying snack. I never thought of portioning out a larger loaf-pan type of recipe into individual servings to do in the microwave!

    1. It’s a great way to make a snack quickly! Sometimes I want something that tastes like homemade baking but I don’t have half an hour or more so these are perfect 🙂

This sounds so good, I can’t wait to try it! Could I substitute the cocoa powder with hot chocolate mix, and if so, do you have any relative idea of what the calorie count would be?

    1. Hey Jasmine! Yes, you could sub with hot chocolate mix. The chocolate mug cake will have a bit more sugar than using just cocoa powder, but it won’t be a lot. I don’t know the calorie intake as I don’t track calories, but you could always use a free calorie calculator if you wanted to know. Hope you love it! 🙂

Delicious! I swapped the almond flour with equal 3 tbsp of whole wheat flour (about half the calories) and it tastes amazing! I also added a teaspoon of natural peanut butter on top. Love it!

    1. Glad you liked this chocolate mug cake 🙂 And thanks for letting us know how the swap turned out – always helpful! xx

Can I use oat flour? I find it being best option for me rather than almond or any other flour types.

So good!!! My banana was frozen so I thawed it before mashing it. It seemed to have a little more moisture so I took a chance and added a tblsp of PB Fit. It is delicious! My go to for a sweet treat now!

Yay! So happy you loved this chocolate mug cake! And yes when bananas are thawed they can add more liquid to a recipe so good for you for listening to those instincts and adding the pb fit. Go you savvy baker! xx
