Chocolate Chip Mug Cake Recipe
What is your favorite type of cookie?
While I love trying new things in almost every area of my life, I am a classic girl when it comes to cookies.
Chocolate chip cookies will always be my one true (cookie) love!
I have a lot of mug cake recipes that include chocolate (all these ones!).
There’s also a chocolate chip mug cookie recipe that is SO good – a single-serving gooey chocolate chip cookie.
And now there’s a chocolate chip mug cake too!
If you’re a vanilla cake fan like my daughter, try this vanilla mug cake.
It’s another favorite single serving dessert with an easy vanilla frosting (I like to make extra frosting and eat it with a spoon)

Ingredients
I love that you can whip up this simple cake instead of making a whole batch of cookies or a whole cake.
Here’s what you need:
All-purpose flour (can also use whole wheat flour, or gluten-free all-purpose flour mix)
sugar (any granulated sugar, white, brown, coconut sugar, erythritol, etc.)
melted butter or oil (or coconut oil, any oil works, or vegan butter)
milk, any kind (cow or non-dairy milk like almond milk, soy milk, etc.)
baking powder
vanilla extract
almond extract
chocolate chips
pinch of salt
Tips for Making the Best Chocolate Chip Cake in a Mug
For the sugar, to get the best warm chocolate chip cookie flavor, use a mix of white and brown sugars.
The best option is 1 tbsp white sugar and 1 tbsp brown sugar.
If you prefer whole sweeteners, I’d recommend 1 tbsp cane sugar (for the “white” sugar) and 1 tbsp coconut sugar (this has a similar taste to brown sugar).
You can use mini chocolate chips, full-size chocolate chips, or even chocolate chunks.
While cute, I’m not a huge fan of mini chocolate chips because I like the bigger bite of chocolate in each chip.
The first time you make this mug cake, put your mug on a plate or paper towel to catch any spills.
Next time you’ll know how long it takes to cook in your microwave.
For me, with the usual mug I use (check out my favorite mugs for gifting), it takes a minute to cook. When I used my parents’ microwave, it took 90 seconds.
This mug cake is best fresh, but will keep for a couple days in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap at room temperature or in the fridge.
Let’s talk about a few variations of this yummy chocolate-chip-filled mug cake…
Chocolate Chip Mug Cake No Egg
This single serving cake is made without an egg, so no subs are needed here.
Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Mug Cake
If you need an easy chocolate dessert that is also gluten-free, this is a great recipe to gluten-free-ify!
Substitute the regular flour for a gluten-free flour mix (this one is great), and you’re good to go!
You might need a little more cooking time with the gf flour, so just keep an eye on that.
Double Chocolate Chip Mug Cake
This chocolate mug cake recipe is surprisingly healthy eating, made with cocoa powder and chocolate chips.
Sometimes we even have it for a high-protein breakfast over here!
Low-Carb Chocolate Chip Mug Cake
To make a low-carb, high protein version, use this recipe for an almond flour mug cake, and add 2 tbsp of chocolate chips.
You can either use dark chocolate chips, or low-carb chocolate chips like these ones.
More grocery stores are stocking low calorie and low carb chocolates, but the best price I’ve found is usually on Amazon through that link.
