As a kid, there was a snack trend in my grade school called “angel bread”.

This delicacy had three important ingredients: white bread, cream cheese, and sprinkles. That nutritional powerhouse was a treat at many little girls’ birthday parties for a couple years there. And it was ALL about the sprinkles.

That’s what makes this funfetti mug cake so fun! Yes it’s a delicious single serving dessert even without the sprinkles, but I feel like if any year needs extra sprinkles, it’s this one right here we’re in!

Best Natural Sprinkles for this Funfetti Mug Cake

I love using natural sprinkles in this mug cake recipe. You can use whatever sprinkles you like, but if you’re looking for natural colored sprinkles, they have come a LONG way in the last few years. You used to only be able to find really pale colors in natural sprinkles, but now there are some super cute ones with deeper (natural) colors!

My favorite natural sprinkles: these naturally colored sprinkles on Amazon. That shop also has a rainbow pancake mix, and bright pink and blue frosting kits, all naturally-dyed.

Funfetti Mug Cake Recipe Tips and Substitutions

A few quick notes for common mug cake ingredient substitutions I get asked about.

You can use a gluten-free all-purpose flour mix (like this one) instead of the regular flour in this mug cake recipe. Coconut flour will not work as a sub in this recipe; I haven’t tried with almond flour. Almond flour might work, but you might need to adjust the microwave time a little. You can also try these almond flour mug cake recipes.

For sugar amounts, you can use between 2 and 3 tablespoons of whatever your favorite sugar is. Regular white sugar, coconut sugar, monk fruit, erythritol. We all loved this mug cake with only 2 tablespoons of sugar. You know best just how sweet your sweet tooth is. Some people might prefer 3 tablespoons, so try either!

This funfetti mug cake is egg-free and can easily be made vegan. Just use any kind of dairy-free milk you like (my favorite is oat milk, but any will be great!), and use oil, or melted coconut oil instead of the butter.

For the cooking time – this can vary with different microwaves and also with different mug sizes. It took my microwave 60 seconds to cook perfectly. The first time you make this mug bread, watch your microwave.

Test doneness, and if it needs a bit more time, add on 15 seconds at a time until it’s fully cooked. The next time you make it, you’ll know exactly how long it takes in your microwave!
