Oatmeal Mug Cake

A friend of mine has the same breakfast every single morning.

Every morning it’s a warm bowl of oatmeal, topped with a handful of walnuts and chocolate chips, and a splash of milk.

Warm, comforting, and (mostly) healthy. He is a creature of habit and he likes his oatmeal!

Since this site is all about the mug cakes, I decided to make an oatmeal mug cake recipe for all the oatmeal lovers out there like my friend.

Here’s a new way to enjoy your favorite breakfast…

Microwave Oatmeal Cake Ingredients

Me and my taste-testers tried several versions of oatmeal mug cakes.

Some with melted butter, some with milk baked in.

Our favorite version was the simplest, and the closest to a simple bowl of oatmeal…

How to Make the Best Oatmeal Mug Cake

For the maple syrup, please for the love of god, use the real stuff.

There is no substitute for real maple syrup. Pancake syrup, table syrup, all that stuff, no.

Real maple syrup is so delicious, and once you’ve had the real stuff, you won’t be able to go back. You can find it in glass bottles, squat plastic jugs, or tin cans.

If you like your mug cakes less sweet, use 1 tablespoon of maple syrup instead of 2 tablespoons.

My daughter and I both loved this recipe the most when we added a splash of milk after the mug cake was cooked so I highly recommend this. Use whatever milk – cow or non-cow – that you like.

Put your mug on a plate to catch any spills when you’re microwaving it.

This mug cake recipe rises up a lot while cooking and settles back down, so choose a mug or ramekin that has extra room.

A good rule of thumb for mug cakes is the batter should only come halfway up the mug before cooking to give enough room for it to expand in the microwave.

For other cozy mug cakes, try this chai spice mug cake or this single-serving gingerbread (one of my personal favorites).

To replace the egg, use chia seeds.

Put 1 tablespoon of chia seeds in a small bowl and add 1 tablespoon of water.

Let sit for a couple of minutes to thicken up.

Stir and add instead of the egg.

Add ¼ teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons raisins before microwaving.
