3-Ingredient Flourless Mug Cake
I have two chocolate mug cake recipes on my blog already and I’m excited to share with you a third! This 3-minute mug cake recipe is completely different from the other two.
This hot chocolate bomb mug cake is SUPER decadent and chocolatey and will totally satisfy your sweet tooth. It’s made with wheat flour and is not gluten-free or flourless.
My healthy chocolate mug cake IS flourless and gluten-free. It uses ground almonds for the “flour” and is protein-packed and so full of flavor. It isn’t easily made keto because of one of the ingredients.

An egg
Cocoa powder
Maple syrup
The egg is essential in this microwave cake recipe – there isn’t really a good sub for it.
The cocoa powder – also essential in a healthy chocolate cake recipe.
Maple syrup is my favorite sweetener to use in this recipe, but here we have options! If you follow a sugar-free, low sugar, diabetic diet, or keto diet, I have some subs for you – see below!

Tips and Substitutions for this Gluten-free Chocolate Mug Cake
My favorite sweetener is pure maple syrup. It is so much yummier than table syrup, but if that’s what you have you can use it in a pinch. Honey works too but I preferred the flavor with maple syrup.
You can also use 2 tablespoons of chocolate sauce or chocolate syrup instead of the maple syrup.
If you follow the Keto diet, sub the maple syrup with Lakanto maple flavored syrup.

A second sugar-free substitution for the maple syrup is this yummy sugar-free chocolate sauce.

Top this Flourless Chocolate Mug Cake with:
- Whipped cream
- Melted chocolate chips
- Chocolate sauce/sugar-free chocolate sauce
- Ice cream
- Sprinkles (we do a lot of sprinkles over here with a 5-year-old!)
- Caramel sauce (my favorite is this date-sweetened caramel sauce – OMG)

3-Ingredient Mug Cake Recipe
This 3-ingredient mug cake is a quick way to satisfy your chocolate cravings. This healthy chocolate mug cake is flourless, refined sugar-free and oil-free too!
- 1 egg (free range)
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp pure maple syrup (you can sub an equal amount of sugar-free syrup, or sugar-free chocolate sauce)
Mix egg, cocoa powder, and maple syrup in a small bowl with a fork or whisk.
Spray a mug or ramekin with cooking spray.
Microwave at high power for 1 minute.
Middle should be soft but cooked; if it needs more time add 15 second increments until done.
Dig in or top with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, caramel sauce, ice cream…
Simple and yummy.
